You would have to compare it the "people food" you plan on feeding to the "dog food".

Most commercial dog food is low, low quality, hormone & drug riddled, packed with uneccessary grains, stuff swept off the floor garbage. This includes brands recommended by vets. (These dog food companies donate large amounts of $$$ to veterinary schools).

There are brands of higher quality ...Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, etc that are made ethically (not tested on animals) and wholesomely. There is a ton of research on the web.

You can easily cook for your dog and freeze baggies for each meal. Use a high quality protein source, pureed veggies or fruits and some rice or pasta if you'd like. You will need to add some supplements as well. I would research under a more breed/age/size specific topic. And keep a list of foods that are harmful handy.

i feed mine the raw diet and i also make them stews, gravy and any other appetizing delightful stuff. I also make my own doggy treats. I do feed dog food but that maybe is once a month when i cannot feed them and my kids feed them.
I have some really healthy dogs and very happy. I do not have vet bills other than the regular checkups and annual shots and dewormings. This has worked for my dogs for 10 years and i will never change unless i just simply cannot do the raw diet and fresh veggie diet anymore.
This is a very contriversal diet but i do not have the health problems most people do with their pets, and i do not trust most pet food companies.
my vet told me to keep up what i am doing as it works for my dogs. I did have 10 and now i am feeding 15.
Before anyone does the raw diet they do need to do the research.

This is an interesting question. I don't believe most people food is bad for a dog. I raise standard poodles and feed them a BARF (biologically assessed raw food) diet. They eat raw meats, bones, and veggies that are pureed. I also supplement with yogurt, small amounts of cheese, rice, and occasionally oatmeal. Don't feed your dog bones that are cooked as they can splinter and cause bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. Foods high in fat or deep fried should be avoided. Chocolate, tea, coffee, and soda should also be avoided due to theobromine. There are also other foods that your dog shouldn't eat like avocado, onions, and garlic as large amounts can be poisonous.

The only bad thing about feeding your dog "people food" is teaching them bad manners. If you feed your dog from your plate then you encourage begging. Make sure you look up a list of foods that are poison to dogs before feeding them people food.

It all depends on the breed, and what you are going to feed it. Small dogs have more digestive problems with people food except sometimes hamburger meat, and boneless chicken are safe. With large breeds, you can give more people food, but I would still mostly feed them a good brand of dry dog food. Dry dog food is not only good nutrition for your dog, but it also keeps their teeth healthier also. I just never give my dog any sweets or candy, because that is harmful to their kidneys. Hope this helped some!

Dog food is real food for a dog! People food can kill an animal, it can cause it to have all kinds of stomach problems and mess it up really bad.

It depends on how active, how large and how healthy your dog is. For example my dog is a huge Black lab/Beagle mix and he has so much energy that he runs off all that extra unhealthiness. On the other hand, my friend had a tiny chuaua (sp?) that the only exercise she got was running around the house. The fed her people food and she became so overweight that she couldn't even jump off a bed or it would break her back. So, which catagory does you're dog fit into?

I don't think it is necessarily BAD for the dog, unless all you feed it is fried chicken, pizza, and beer! My dad used to give my dog steak or chicken leftovers...my dog even ate salad and fruit! He turned out fine. Now that I am married though, he is my dad's dog. He is a rott/black lab..way too big for an apartment! But yeah, I'd say SOME ppl food is okay for dogs.

I think it's okay in moderation. But don't over-do it. My mom did with her dog, and she (the dog) died of renal failure, which was a direct result of all the people food she ate.
