Does anyone realize that anorexia and bulimia are mental disorders and not some kind of "diet" to get skinny? Please tell me there are still intelligent folks out there. I need to hear it.

Yes, I do realize it may start with a diet. However, the thing I'm trying to point out here are the "wannarexics" and the like who purposely starve themselves and purge because "that's what skinny girls do" and "this is how you get skinny". Aka. the people who think eating 100 cals a day or throwing up after every meal is cool and is just a neat trick to get thin. I get so pissed off.

Obviously, not nearly enough people realize this. This is one of the bad sides of the pro-anorexia/bulimia movement. Young girls [and boys] are now thinking of these diseases as DIETS, when they are DEADLY.
I'm glad there are at least a few people who realize the significant difference.

I am not trying to upset you so understand that and I know I am intelligent. Don't you think that the beginning phase of anorexia and bulimia is a "diet" that gets out of control and progresses to a mental disorder. So what I am trying to say or ask is that someone just doesn't wake up one day and say "gee, I am going to stop eating" I think they initially stop eating as a form of a diet. Of course there is major control issues and self perception issues that entail the whole disease.

Maybe you need to know that some people don't choose to be. I became annorexic by definition of not being physically able to eat. My first child was stillborn and it became physically and mentally draining to eat. I lost 70 lbs in about 4 months. Yes it was part of my mental state but I did not choose to start it as a diet. Some people just cannot make themselves eat. I can remember days with out food but I did not think about eating or food.

People with those problems are not freaks or weirdos as society labels them. They have serious mental conditions that shoud be treated as any other. Many teenagers have died or been seriously injured as a result of the medias portrayal of the so-called "perfect" body.

Yes, they are mental disorders. Anyone who thinks these are a "diet program" only proves the fact that it's mental.

Yes, it's true that it's a mental disorder. I know that it usually stems for a need for control when life seems out of control or you have no control over your own life.
