Preferably under 10/15 pounds and easy to groom, but the latter is not an absolute necessity.

I have travelled with minature schnauzers and an old english sheepdog. Miniature schnauzers are usually 15-20 lbs and do not shed, but they do need to get clipped or groomed regularly. They are great dogs, very sturdy, very smart, and good watchdogs.

A sheltie (shetland sheepdog) they weigh more like 20lbs and they do have pretty big coats but they are the best companion dog alive.

They are the second smartest breed of dog without the aggresssion of border collies(# 1 smartest) and they have been bred for hundreds of years to follow the shepherds instructions from hundreds of yards away and now they are the #1 breed used in AKC obedience trials, and #2 in Agility (behind Jack russels)

They are also incredibly loyal and so dependable. They are the best dogs in the world.

I would also reccomend any other herding breed for the same reason, their purpose is to serve their owner, and do so dependably.

I would highly suggest AGAINST any terrier or hound breeds, because their purpose is to lead not to follow, and it isn't easy to fight genetics. Terriers were bred for digging up badgers, ferrets, and rats and they will dig up lawns and they love to roll in dead animals and other rotten smelling things because, as hunters they don't want to smell like a dog. Hounds are likely to run off in pursuit of squirrels, cats, and other a even small ones. And hounds are the absolute hardest to housebreak, followed by terriers.

Herding dogs, retrievers, and some toy breeds are the best bet. And just because a dog is smaller, doesn't mean it's easier to handle.

Papillons are good dogs that love to ride in cars and be with people, but a) they need daily brushing and combing to keep their long hair free of tangles, and b) they overheat easily and can never, EVER be left in the motorhome if it is not running with air conditioning.

Italian greyhounds and chihuahuas are both small and require minimal grooming.

Definitely a chihuahua. They love to be on the go, do not need a lot of room, and can be trained to use a litterbox. I have talked with several people who are truck drivers and they take their dogs with them on the road. So they are good for mobile living! Even the long haired ones do not take a lot of grooming, just a daily brush and once a month bath and nail clipping.

maybe a toy poodle? Non sheeding and cute. Though, they do require grooming.
Just be careful with terriers and other little dogs, as their energy levels tend to be higher.
Good luck!

Chihuahuas - they get up to 3-5 lbs. and they are perfectly content just laying around all day. they don't need much excercise and their number 1 favorite thing to do is cuddle with you on yer lap.
