Chocolate contains theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. If dogs eat too much it can cause seizures and death. Dogs seem to be much more sensitive to it than humans.

Chocolate beans have an ingredient in them that is poisonous to a dog. Even the mulch that is made from cocoa beans is poisonous. It can cause severe liver damage. The only time to feed a dog chocolate is when the sad day comes that it is time to put your dog down. Then let him eat all the chocolate he wants. It is a sweet gesture and a luxury never give to a dog. So when it's his last day on earth, have a chocolate party and let your dog eat all he wants.

It is bad to feed your dog chocolate because of some of the chemicals/ingredients in the chocolate. Depending on this dogs size would actually affect the dog. My dog weights 6 pounds and he ate a cookie with chocolate bits in it, but it was such a small amount he was ok, so therefore it all depends on how much they get, and how much it will unforutanly talk to kill the dog.

Theobromine is the compound in chocolate that dogs react negatively to. It is present in different amounts in different kinds of chocolate...milk chocolate has less, dark chocolate has more, and bittersweet or baking chocolate has the most. It can affect your dog's cardiac rhythm and induce myocardial infarction (heart attack), seizures (in dogs prone to epilepsy), and gastrointestinal bleeding. All of these conditions can cause death of the dog. The break down of theobromine takes quite a long time and if the dog is fed chocolate on more than one occasion it can accumulate in the dogs system causing death. Theobromine is a stimulant that is also found in soda, tea, and coffee. It is best to avoid all of these in your dog's diet.
