always start of with a .22 lr. there are many reasons
1. cheap to shoot...this is important so you can,and will get lots of practice and learn how to handle the weapon safely and efficiently.
2. very fun and accurate chambering
3.if you do shoot yourself in the foot it wont blow it off, just lots of pain..foot still attached.
I recomend the smith and wasson 22a because mine is very accurate and easy to clean and grip feels very good. the ruger and browning are also good. didnt like grips on ruger, and browning buckman kind of pricey. 22a can be found new for under 200.

I'd get a medium size .357 Magnum revolver. You can start out shooting .38 Special target rounds for lower recoil. Revolvers are also very easy to use since they have no extra levers and controls on them. As you progress you can run full house .357 Magnum rounds in it.

A .22 or a .22 magnum
They are cheep to shoot and have little recoil
Ruger has some nice MKII semi-autos and revolvers in those calibers.

Glock 19 is 9mm. Glock 23 is S&W .40, i think. There are numerous other models/ calibers. Glocks can be expensive, but they are accurate and easy to take care of.

i would recomend a .22 LR. i learned to shoot with a .22 Ruger pistol. i would suggest that you get the 12 inch bull barrel model. it is very accurate, easy, and cheap to shoot. little to no recoil. but my all time favorite hand gun is a .223 Thompson Contender with open sights. very sweet the best shooting i ever did was with that gun

What do you want the gun for?
Target or self protection.
This is one of the best targer pistols made:

As for home protection, I would recomment a used .38 special or .357 magnum.
