I used to work in a pet store that sold all these animals, so let me give you some information on each to help you decide!
1. Guinea Pig
Pros: cute, pretty friendly, usually good with kids, usually pretty inexpensive for pet and supplies, usually stay pretty healthy
Cons: fairly messy in their cages, can be kind of boring, make a lot of noise squeaking when they want something, need regular maintenance like nail trimmings that some people can't do themselves and need a vet to do, urine smells pretty bad
2. Rat
Pros: cute, can be very friendly, can be trained to stay on shoulder for long periods of time and just hang out with you, usually pretty inexpensive for pet and supplies, don't usually need their nails or teeth trimmed
Cons: usually need to be purchased at a young age to make tame enough to be good pet, urine smells very bad, fairly messy in their cages, prone to tumors when they get a little older, can be noisy when playing with stuff or running on wheel in the cage, usually only live about two to four years or so
3. Ferret:
Pros: cute, lots of fun, very playful, usually pretty friendly, usually good with kids, live longer than rats and guinea pigs, usually pretty good with other pets
Cons: can be more on the expensive side for pet and supplies, need specific cages to be healthy for their feet, need daily interaction and exercise (not good for a busy person but great for someone who's not busy and is lonely), feces smells really bad, some people don't like their body odor but some don't mind it, need yearly vaccines from the vet like dogs and cats, can give some pretty nasty bites if prompted, great escape artists, will steal your stuff (remote controls, keys, silverware, etc) and chew on it or hide it, can be noisy when playing with stuff in their cages
4. Cockatiel or Budgie
Pros: pretty, can be very friendly to people if only bird and if interacted with a lot, live longer than all the other pets you've mentioned
Cons: very messy, can be very nasty to people if there is more than one bird and if it is not interacted with enough, very noisy, very fragile, need regular maintenance (nail trimmings, beak trimmings, and wing trimmings), can be fairly expensive with pet and supplies, need fairly large cages to be happier
5. Sugar Glider
Pros: very cute, can be very friendly if interacted with enough, can be trained to ride around on shoulder or in pocket for long periods of time, can eat almost anything (mealworms, crickets, eggs, pasta, fresh fruit & veggies, yogurt baby food, and more in addition to food from pet store), can be very entertaining, live longer than rats and guinea pigs
Cons: can be very nasty if not interacted with enough (I have the scars to prove it), can be pretty messy, need large cages with lots of toys and things to do, can be fairly expensive for pet and supplies, can get lost in house or outside very easily
I hope I've helped! It really just depends on your lifestyle as to which pet you should get. If you have very young children, I would suggest a guinea pig. If you have children that are a little bit older, I'd suggest a rat or ferret. And if you don't have kids; any of the above! Have fun with whatever you get!

Get an Email me! They eat very little and are soooo entertaining. It will never poop, just fart and that evaporates quickly with the press of a delete button.
Ok, being serious now:
Budgies are cute but the feathers come out of the cage a lot and seed remnants go everywhere. You'll be vaccuuming every other day around the cage.
I never had a guinea pig, or rat, or ferret, or cockatiel or a sugar glider, so I don't know.
I did have cats, a dog, turtles, a firebelly newt, hamsters, fish, and a crested gecko. Of those, I preferred the dwarf hamsters and gecko the best.
Right now we have 2 cats and 2 budgies, and I think of all the pets I've mentioned, the cats are the most entertaining, loving, and easiest to care for.

1, 2, 4, 3, 5. Ferrets will need the most work and they need shots. Also, have an odor no matter how clean they are kept. Rats the easiest. Guinea Pigs easy but need a vitamin C daily. Cockatiel very sweet if hand raised, lovely pet. Not too expensive to keep. Sugar glider...has special needs, not recommended.

Female rats are very playful. Male rats are a little more cuddly but still enjoy playing. Guinea pigs are great if you want a cuddly pet - they aren't so 'playful'. Guinea pigs may be slightly more expensive... depending on what type of cage you get, but yeah, they are more expensive in general I think. You will only spend about $100 initially if you get rats... which I highly recommend. -if you get a guinea pig or a rat, get a wire cage, spend the money, they are so much nicer than others-

1 Guinea Pig - good all round pet here - my first vote
I wouldnt suggest sugar gliders- these are gimmick pets - nocternal and stinky probably too costly as are ferrets
Budgie or Cockatiel also too costly especially for a cage - sadly most birds are kept in cages that are much much to small - these birds should have cages the size of a small bath room really

Well rats only live a couple years...allthough the parakeet and cockatiel are playful...you can't do a whole lot with them...guinee pigs are very nervous animals....I would get a ferret....but sugar gliders are so cool....they would probably be more work than anything on this list...deffinitely get a ferret!

Guinea Pigs are edible, just saying that because you will get bored with any pet you have and at least when you have had enough of your Guinea Pig you know it will make a tasty and nutritious snack.
Simple really, when you think about it.

I think white rats make the best pets, they are very intelligent and responsive and you can have them sitting on your shoulder when you are walking around - they love being sociable. The only thing is to make sure you keep their teeth short by giving them lots of gnawing foods. My daughter's rat's teeth grew so long they grew into his face and he got an abcess. They are cheap to feed and eat nuts, seeds and vegetables.
They live for about 3-5 years if well cared for.
