This Probrably happened because when you left it on overnight it when into "hibernation" which is a feature of XP to preserve power when inactive.

the probrable reason this happened is because you didn't shut down properly.

The solution I suggest is try booting into safe mode pressing F8 on the system startup.

If you can't boot into safe mode. well, you might have to reformat and reinstall an Operating system.

for people who've spoke back boot in secure mode/final sturdy configuration, close up and reread the question. I definitely have experienced this subject many cases, you want a clean installation of homestead windows, the terrific thank you to get entry to homestead windows and that i'm not specific why this works. Open the computing gadget take out the bios battery, replace 10-20sec later, attempt booting then, it could artwork promptly from that. Else boot with a NTFS for dos cd/floppy and replica the records from that reveal.

Trying booting the PC in Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key during boot up until it goes to a menu screen with Safe Mode as a choice. If you can get into Safe Mode, do a system restore to the day before the problem started.
