Dextrose Maltodextrin High Fructose Corn Syrup
Before we get to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), we will take a look at two other frequently used sweeteners, dextrose and maltodextrin.

Dextrose
Dextrose is more or less an industry term for glucose. Glucose is the most prevalent sugar in the human and the only molecule that the brain can metabolize. Dextrose is refined from corn starch. It has a very high glycemic index (no surprise since it is glucose) and while it contains no fructose, it is still a simple sugar that is very readily absorbed. It is not as dangerous as sucrose but it still is a highly processed product that should be avoided.

Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is also a refined product usually made from either corn or potatoes. It is multiple glucose units somewhat loosely hooked together (a polymer). Because the bonds between the glucose units are very weak, it is also very readily absorbed and has a very high glycemic index. Like dextrose it should be avoided as much as possible. It has been called a "sugar substitute" but that is based on a rather strict definition of sugar as "sucrose." It is a very common additive and I have found it in many packaged foods, including potato chips.

Rockstar is a good maker of energy drinks. The original is a classic and also helps prevent hangovers, but what really shines for Rockstar is Rockstar Cola and Rockstar Juiced, the best energy cola and the best juice like energy drink. I have drank tons of them and really don't think they are bad for you. There is no conclusive evidence that taurine is bad for you and even some evidence that caffeine is good for you.

I don't know if they are bad for you or not. I've tried them, and don't care for them. But, mostly its because they taste bad. Like old sweet tarts.
I can see how they might create problems in a person who has unstable blood sugars. Be it high, or low. But, people seem to like them.
I feel the same way about Red Bull. But, I've heard they are actually good when they are mixed with Vodka.

It's caffeine and sugar, or caffeine and sweetener, if you get the diet version.

There's less sugar in coffee and tea.

As long as you don't have heart disease or high blood pressure, it probably won't do you any harm, but don't drink too many and don't mix them with alcohol in an attempt not to get drunk.

i love rockstar - i have tried nearly all of the energy drinks i have seen in my local stores and rockstar tastes the best. i think the only thing it will hurt is the pocket - they get a little expensive.
