Guinea pigs are lovely pets- all you have to do is make sure they have plenty of hay to eat as well as regular food and give them a nice big run to play in. If they get stressed they can get skin allergies so just keep them in a happy secure place and they will be fine. It's probably a good idea to get a couple of them and don't let them live with a rabbit because a rabbit will often beat up a guinea pig badly.

A rat might also be a good option for you, they are very playful and intelligent pets. Or if you want something even more frisky and fun you might want to consider a ferret, they are very inquisitive and you can even walk them around on a leash if you feel like it. Both also need a reasonable sized cage or run to live in.

Get a rabbit. They only cost about $25-$50 to buy and smaller ones like lionheads, netherlands, mini rex, holland lops and such (mature wieght is about 2-4lbs and a little smaller than a box of cleanex) can be housed in guinea pig cages and they can be litter trained. Those are the primary breeds seen at pet stores. Also feed is cheap, only $10 for 50lbs where I live and it takes a bunny about a year to eat all that. I would reccomend against ferrets they smell even when descented) And cockatiels are LOUD, parakeets would be a better idea.

If you want to see some rabbits and get a better idea of their size you could go to you county or state fair, most state 4H associations have rabbits as a project and the would be displayed there.

I have had 5 guinea pigs and despite my best efforts, found them quite nervous and they didnt like being held, although they loved to be stroked. I have never had a rat but I have heard they make good pets. Guinea pigs and rats both live around 5-7 years.
Maybe it would be best to get two as well, as they would be company for each other if you were too busy to play with them.

Guinea pigs and rats both make excellent pets and can be held. They are not very expensive, but do your research on the particular care they need. Cockatiels are a lot of fun....get a hand raised baby and it will love you! Larger parrots are very expensive and their cages need to be huge and are expensive. They have very special needs, which are not easy to fulfill. Chinchillas are nice, but any time you get into the more rare exotics, there will be more expense and specialized care involved.

I have had two guinea pigs, and loved them. If you handle them a lot from baby hood, they are very holdable. They are lots of fun to watch. One of mine learned what the refrigerator door sounded like, and squeaked like crazy every time I opened it. I kept mine in a laundry basket, so cost was minimal.

I got a ring-necked turtledove (aka 'laughing dove') last year, and was amazed at what a wonderful pet she is. Her cooing is very soothing, and she has an infectious "laugh". When I let her out, she likes to fly back and forth from my head to other landing spots. When I hold her on my shoulder she snuggles under my hair and makes contented sounds. They are inexpensive, along with supplies it would be well under your budget.

cockatiels are fun, but they can be loud if they are a boy. they are also more expensive and because its a bird you have to take much better care of it than a rodent. If you're going for cuddly dont get a bird... they're a lot of work, hard to clean up, and loud at times. But if you have the money and time they're great long companions! (cockatiels live 20 years.. think about that too...)

Chinchilla's are really cute and like to run around a room and play. Though they are nocturnal, they still are alot of fun and can become attached to their human. Also, rats can be alot of fun too and are pretty smart and like human contact.

get a ferret, they seem like cute little guys, playful.

I personally had a quaker parrot, he was a little bit expensive but so much fun, he learned how to talk, said words and phrases and repeated sounds like liked, phone ringing, door slamming, zippers zipping and my cat meowing.

he's a little bit bigger then a cockatiel but more fun.
