I have programs on my computer that appear on the System Configuration Utility under that start up tab. Some of these do not have to be running when the computer starts up and have been causing some problems. I have unchecked the items... for instance, on is my Earthlink Task Bar, and then the Configuration goes to Selective Startup Selection and has been causing problems. My computer at home is not like this and only has a few items in the start up. How can these items be deleted from the start up but still remain on the computer? I was thinking there was an area to find that information, but I cannot find it! Please help me. Thanks

Best way to remove programs from Startup in a network environment.

This works if your are using Win2K or WinXP on the client.

Log into your account.

Double left click on My Computer
Double left click on the default drive. This is usually C:
Double left click on Documents and Setting
Double left click on the folder that has your login User name
Double left click on Start Menu
Double left click on Programs
Double left click on Startup

Right click on the item that you want to delete
Scroll to Delete and left click

Left click on Yes

Close the window

Restart your computer.

If you need more help let me know.

Best Wishes and have fun but be careful.

When you uncheck items on the start that just mean that they won't start when the computer starts and run in the background. For most items this isn't a problem because the programs will start when you start a task that requires them.

For example qtask.exe is a program that runs waiting for you to click on a link that opens a quicktime movie file. If this is uncheck in the startup the movie will still play after a short delay for quicktime to load.

Some items, and perhaps this is the case with the earthlink task bar use more than one way to start up when a computer runs. If you disable its startup item it will still try to run at startup. Check the preferences or properties for the earthlink task bar to see if there is some box checked telling it to run at start up or in the background.

Right click 'My Computer' then left click 'Manage', 'Services and Applications', 'Services'. Select the items you do not want to run by double clicking to open the item for editing. Once you have that window open you can select to have the application started automatically, manually or disable it altogether.
