Yep, hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
A bunch of ancient people made a bigass computer and asked it "What's the answer to life, the universe, and everything" and it came up with 42. They didn't understand, so the computer told them to build an even bigger question to discover the QUESTION to life, the universe, and everything. Life the universe and everything is the name of the third book.
Specifically, the question is "What is 6 times 7" but if both the answer and the question are known simultaneously, it's theorized that the entire universe will cease to exist and be replaced by something even more strange. It has also been theorized that this has happened at least once before.
The essence of the 42 idea (but not forty two specifically) is that it's irrelevant to try and find some concise "Formula" for what life is. You end up with overly simplistic and meaningless answers when you seek for meaning. Or something like that.

in a joke they build a master computer and asks it what is the meaning of life, the universe and everything.
after millions of years of thinking the answer is 42 then the computer says the problem is you really dont know the right question...

It comes from the book and movie. "hitch hikers guide to the galaxy." In that story a group of aliens asked the best computer in the universe to tell them the meaning of life. Its answer after 10,000 years of thinking was 42.

You should watch the movie "The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy" ... excellent funny movie.
In that movie they build a gigantic mega-computer and ask it to calculate the meaning of life. When they come back to get the answer in a few million years, the answer they get is "42".

42 is the perfect answer to any question, or the ultimate question.
It comes from "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy", which, by the way, is a great book by Douglas Adams
