when you are telling a lie and you want to tell the lie effectively then believing that your lie is the truth at least in that instant will give you the confidence to sound convincing and will help you look confident...
its like 95% believes your lie
and the rest 5% the scared part of you that is scared of being found out knows the truth..
i guess its a bit like roleplaying, acting...
you just take on the character, role
besides most of the time the only way you can tell a lie well is if most of what you are saying is true and you are just adding in extra details or are ommitting certain things..
so really you do believe what you are saying bcz most of it is true and so therefore it sounds truthful...
OR
another example is when someone so badly wants to believe their own lies bcz the truth is far too painful they start to believe their lies especially if they repeat them ...
deep down they know they are untrue but in order for their consciences to fell better they delude themselves at least on the surface or for a certain amount of time..
OR
there are just some nasty people out there who would rather live a lie or be nasty and not acknowledge what they have done or want to face up to their own nastiness so they lie to themselves or act all dumb when in fact they are the ones at fault and they are trying to offload their crap on others
OR
There are those who prefer to construct their lives around lies bcz they think others wont think they are as wonderful, popular, clever otherwise
OR
They want to live in their own little fantasy world where the their lies make them feel better or more intresting or whatever else
OR
some people begin to believe in their own lies if their own life depends on it for example people on witness protection programs who have to chance their names, their past etc at some point the new identity becames kinda internalised..
OR
I DONT KNOW LOL THERE ARE PROB MANY OTHER REASONS which are just as individualistic as the person ...
but i have come up at least with some theories ideas... :)

Though it is not a common occurrence, people can come to believe their own lies. I do not think there is a single, common pattern to how people arrive at that point. But I believe that the most common way is that people will tell a lie over and over. Each time it is told, that person's conscience becomes a little less shocked, a little less sensitive to it. And the time comes that the conscience no longer feels anything; it has been desensitized to a particular lie. At that point, the "lie" no longer is no longer "right or wrong;" it is simply a statement. At this point, the liar simply decides "this is true because I want it to be true." And the conscience has been desensitized; it has no opinion! And so, a new truth is born out of an old lie. And, in fact, this is very much like how one is brain-washed!
Maybe those who believe their own lies are "self-brain washed?"

Pathological liars do actually believe their "stories"....they can fool even the best psychologists as they actually believe what they say and can be very dangerous...i dated someone who had this condition...he was charming and seemed "normal" along with convincing....slowly, things just started to not piece together...time and place in his stories started to be altered...the brain can do amazing things....
