How do you keep natural twists/ locs from coming loose wihout using rubber bands?

Question

My sister is trying to loc her hair but her hair is so soft that it won't stay twisted together. Instead it unravels after a few minutes. We bought bees wax but all it did was make her hair straight and stick out. How can we twist her hair together so she can start her locs?
Ps we are African-American women but we do have a mixed heritage background, so our hair is not tightly curled and kinky like black women with beautiful locs

we tried the Pre-con gel too, but she didnt sit under the dryer. the gel makes her hair softer! it did that to me too. we havent mixed the beeswax in it though.

I am a stylist and loctician, I have locs that I have been growing for 3 years and my fiance for 7. I also have soft hair and started my locs from very short. I started mine with coils but you sound like you may be talking about double strand twists are two strands. I would suggest not using beeswax as it gets embedded in the hair and is really hard to wash completely out, and when the hair locs it will cause it to get dirty alot and attract lint. The gel also is not a good choice because it flakes. I personally use Loca Fella products and a mixture of aloe vera gel. When I first started they took at least a year to start locing because they would unravel; just re twist the parts that unravel but don't twist everyday because it will thin those areas. Your hair will start locing from the middle and spread to the roots and ends as time passes. Just keep your hair clean but don't wash too often as it defeats the purpose, to loc and not unravel. Once your locs are mature, then you can wash them as often as you please, as they will not come loose. You should have a loctician do them or look into sister locs or the latchhook technique which locs the hair instantly. I have had dreadies before. wash your hair with dawn soap it will remove the oils and make it strw like. too keep them tight you have to roll them daily between your hands and stroke them up and down. Rounding the ends with out rubber bands is a little more triky if your hair is not super tight curls like african amaricans but if you keep seperating they ends in small 1-2 inch portins starting with the center and pulling back towards the dread and rolling it in it will eventually stick.

Along with the bees wax try using a little styling gel, like "Pre-Con Gel" by Summit (it is a gel that is brown in color, it is also a protein conditioner).

Mix a little of the bees wax and styling gel together and apply to to each section, twist to lock, after you have twisted the hair, sit under a hooded dryer to allow the gel to dry and set. It should hold. If you don't like the result of the bees wax and gel together, try it with just the gel.
