I used to wonder the same thing. It has to do with the weakness of a system that promises something in heaven if you behave here on earth.
It's much better if you decide you'll have a better life here on earth if you improve your behavior here on earth. Take each day and each situation one at a time, and forget about church as a way to manage your day-to-day morality.
You'll find that you answer to a higher code--your own--than the one established by the church.

It's something you have to work at. It's easy to get distracted once you get back home and you remember all the other things you have to do.
Find creative ways to remind yourself of your spiritual goal. If you've got a Bible verse that inspires you, write it on a sticky note and put it on your mirror, or someplace else you'll see it often. Every time you see it, make a conscious effort to take a step in the right direction. It will get you thinking about it more often.
Good luck!

I know that's really hard isn't it.
I'm the same way, I say i am never going to do that again and walla there i go. This scripture helps me.
We are not alone!
Romans 7:19 for the good that I wish i do not do but the bad that i do not wish is what i practice.
That was the apostle Paul so i figure if he had to work on it then it is ok if i have to work on it. Keep trying thats what i do.

The illusion that you have will-power, that you can "do" anything is pure fantasy. You are swept up and controlled by external forces of which you know nothing. You think you will change your ways when you are with one group of people, when you are at home in a different place and different poeple, you fall back into and rely on old habits and patterns of behaving. Welcome to the human race! When you begin to realize your own helplessness in changing or doing anything about yourself, then you will be ready to submit to your higher power that lives within yourself and turn your life over to the Spirit within you who knows how to do everything and will teach you all the excellent ways of the Holy One who lives within you and on high. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. You love the ways of the flesh to much and find it hard to part with them. This can be from not having a faithful life of devotions and prayer. Your spiritual part needs to feed as does the physical or you become weak. When we don't spend time with Christ we don't know or feel His love and care and unbelief sets in. The other problem is we often seek to change in our own strength. We don't cry out to God for help or keep His word in our heart. God usually doesn't let someone get their way when they ignore Him. He offers help and we make light of it by ignoring Him and just trying to be morally a "good" person. He is not after making you morally good first of all but making you righteous and one who seeks His kingdom and His righteousness, one who knows what it means to take up ones cross and counts it a joy to suffer lose for His sake. So bottom line look to Jesus and cry out to Him who has promised to help those who ask in truth.

"Going to church" is not what changes you. Change is not why God asks us to go to church. Church is not so that we can change, either.
It's not about any of that. It's about getting to know God.
Imagine your favorite celebrity getting on TV one day and saying "You know, what I really want is to meet Mauki. I want to spend time with her and get to know her as well as one of my best friends." What would you think? That's what God has done. That's when the change happens. When you're in the relationship and focused on chasing after Him with everything you've got, then you'll know when/how/what to change.

I can't find the exact text but I remember reading about Paul having the same problem. He said something like this, "The things I want to do I do not do but the things that I don't want to do those are the things which I do" When in times of temptation we go to God in prayer and study His word He will help us in overcoming the devil and his ways.

You have a conscious reminder of why you think you need to change your ways in church. If you want to change permanently, surround yourself with evidence of the damage that you're dealing to yourself by not.

You've got to really want to change in order to do it, whether you call yourself a Christian or are a 12-stepper. The process is the same. If you mess up, get up and keep trying, just never give up.
