To get at least 35 mpg in the city, you will need to look at a hybrid. But Hybrids are not cheap because of the special engine. Honda Civic hybrid gets 49 in the city.

I guess fuel economy hasn't been much of an issue in the US until the reent hike in gas prices. Over here in the UK 40mpg would be disappointing for a new car and the question would be more likely to be asking about cars that do 60 or 70mpg.
Even larger cars such as Jaguars, Mercs, BMW's etc are expected to return a good milage. My brother is looking at buying a Jaguar which returns about 55mpg.
I'd have thought that pretty much any compact should give good mileage - especially a new one or a well serviced and tuned up second hand one.

Well I had a Geo that was a great car. I had the convertible and I loved it. It got 40 mpg. I had it for 4 years and never had to replace anything but a battery and tires I think I had to put a fuse in it for the air once. And of course changing the oil, but I couldn't tell anyone to get a more price\fuel efficient vehicle.

I had a 1988 Accord that got 40mpg. But it had only 95hp or so.
The Prius gets highers mpg in the city is because at stoplights, the engine shuts off to save fuel. Never gets a chance to do that on the highway.

Just saw it advertised: the Toyota Yaris. See the link for details. The ad only says 34mph city, though.
The Prius, however, gets 60mph in the city. Funny thing is that it gets only 51mph on the highway.
Also check out the hybrids from Honda.
