when you squeeze it, it should give just a little under your fingers. if it gives too much (borderline "squishy") it's too ripe and won't taste very good.
also, if all the avocados are too hard, you can buy the hard ones and then put them in a brown paper bag for 2-3 days, then they should be perfect!

A ripe avocado is relatively firm, but will yield to gentle pressure when held in the palm of the hand and squeezed. Color cannot always be trusted to determine whether or not an avocado is ripe. Indeed, the squeeze test is the most accurate.
If your avocado is not yet ripe, but you want to quicken the process, place it in a paper bag on the window sill or counter for 1-2 days. It should be ready after that!
Enjoy!!!

.Hey!
well its quite simple. avocado is ripe when you push in with ur fingers and it leaves a slight indention. if its really hard to touch, then what helps is,you can either leave it on the countertop 4 a day or two,or put it in a paper bag over night with a slice of apple.same works with underripe bananas. good luck!

When the outside edge is soft and it turns dark green. If you want to slow the ripening, put in the fridge, then pull out a day or two before needed. Best way to scoop it is with an ice cream scoop.

It yields very slightly to your thumb's pressure on it. If it gives in too easily, it's overripe. If it doesn't give at all, you've still got a couple days before it's ripe.

It gives under pressure from your fingertips... the tips about the paper bag accelerating the ripening process are true, and to speed up the process even further, stick a banana in the paper bag as well, it releases gases essential to the ripening process
