You need to start by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You will need your taxes from the previous year.

The most common grant available for undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need is the Pell Grant. The maximum amount available per year is $4050. The U.S. Department of Education maintains a webportal of information on student aid.

As you are going into special education, you may also qualify for special loan cancellation programs or low interest loan programs. One is the Perkins (or Direct) Loan program. This is a 5% interest, no cost loan, which can be 100% canceled. If you work in an area of critical need, you will have 1/5 of the loan canceled every year for five years. To qualify for a Perkins loan, you have to have demonstrated financial need. This loan program has a limited amount of funds, so you will need to request it early in the year (before March 1).

Teachers in critical needs areas area also eligible to have up to $5000 of their Stafford loans cancelled ($1000 a year for each year of service for up to 5 years).

Your state may also have grant or loan programs for people going into education. You should contact your school's (or prospective school's) financial aid office for more specific information.
