My company is taking me to a farewell lunch on Friday. I can go wherever I want! Here are the catches:
1. It can't be a place like per se, because we'd never get a reservation in 3 days.
2. I'm a vegetarian -- I eat no meat or seafood (I do eat eggs & dairy)
3. I work in Midtown West, so the restaurant should be reasonably close (say, betw 5th & 10th ave, 35th and 70th St), but I'd make exceptions.

My favorite cuisines are Mexican, Italian, Indian, and "New American," though I'm willing to try anything. The budget is basically unlimited. I've been to Rosa Mexicano, Utsav, Bombay Palace, and Remi.

I've ruled out the usuals -- Peter Lugar, Le Bernadin, Aquavit, Esca, Jean Georges, L'Impero (because it's far), etc. (unless someone can assure me one of these has very good vegetarian lunches)

I could fallback on the Ritz/Waldorf, but prefer not to. Suggestions? They're bugging me to pick a place (I suggested cheap mexican w/ margaritas but they want to go fancy)

I've been to Remi and its very good. The risotto is usually a good veggie choice, although sometimes they make it with fish stock. Always a safe choice. They have a number of pasta dishes as well...so I am sure you can make an excellent meal there. This would be my second choice (see below.)

I had lunch at Bombay Palace last week. They have a wide variety of vegetarian dishes. The food was excellent...but HEAVY. After lunch I needed a major nap.

I would call Jean Georges. See what they do for vegetarians. I've been there a number of times without disappointment....and its a great "pull out all the stops" place. This would be my first choice.

One more suggestion. Cafe des Artistes. Its a terrific room. I was there about a year ago. I am not a vegetarian, so I wasn't scouting vegetarian dishes. But they have such beautiful fresh vegetables, I cannot believe you would not have an excellent lunch.

Good luck...and let us know what you choose!

Jean Georges, if you call in advance, would likely be happy to accommodate your vegetarian needs.

Aquavit has a vegetarian tasting menu, and the food is great.
