what age does a dog go into heat?

i have a 5 month old female chihuahua.i'm just curious when shes going in to heat.if she does start heat what do i do?

Most dogs have their first heat cycle at 9-12 months, but small dogs sometimes a month or two earlier. If you do not plan to breed your little chih. you should have her spayed asap. A dog who is spayed before she has her first heat cycle will reduce her risk of mammary cancer by as much as 98%. If you plan to breed her, research her breed carefully for what to expect and how to keep her and the puppies healthy. You should also wait until at least her second if not third heat cycle. This will allow her to fully mature before she has to support new life.

most females go into heat as early 5-8 months. Some, may push it upto 10 months but usually sooner. That is the time for their first menstrual cycle. As stated above, you might want to have the lysol an lots of rags handy to clean up. (especially the first one). Also, any male dogs at home, might need to seperate them for a couple days/weeks. Since she is still young, keep all male dogs at a distance. Keep them at a distance until she is about 2 years old every heat cycle. If you plan on mating her, after 2 years old is a good time to start the process.
