We got our nephew a razor scooter for xmas and he just LOVED it! He said it was in his top 3 gifts, the other two being high end electronics... Nintendo and something else. At the end of the day, it's still the gifts that DO something that kids love. :)

Some kind of an art project or kit. They have tons of stuf to choose from at Barnes and Noble (or other bookstores).

Or, get him a skethc pad and art media and let his own creativity take over.

Books: The Bunnicula books by James Howe are GREAT! And they are at his reading level (age-wise...I don't know how good of a reader he actually is).

Or, you could go to any bookstore, check out the kids' section and look for a book that might interest him, there.

School is about to start, so you could get him a nonfiction book. There are all kinds of wonderful books about the body, nature, astronomy, study helps, etc. - stuff written especially for his age group.

That's what I would do. I'd either get something he could make or something he could read.

Board Games from Target or Wal-Mart, hand-held game, Pokemon cards, CD with has favorite music (from iTunes???), a season pass to Six Flags, CD player or Mp3 player, some craft kits where he can make cool stuff if he likes art, Smithsonian kits if he likes science, or E(veryone) rated video games.

Cut the Mp3 player and add remote control car. 9 year old boys don't want clothes as presents. Okay, funny shirts are always cool or buy him some clothes if you like that his parents would never buy him, but appropriate of course.

Anything but video games because I wasted my childhood on them. I would buy a model rocket kit, with an a small engine. Or a museum pass to some sort of scientific application. I wish my parents took me to more of them now. You just have to find what kind of activity gets the child to stay fascinated. Trust me nine year olds are pretty receptive to anything as long as it is fun.

A small storage box that locks. This is an age where kids are getting a real sense of privacy. Put some stickers or something inside the box, but he'll appreciate having a place for his own private stuff.

My 8 year old son enjoys video games ($$$), puzzles, board games, art supplies, DVDs/videos & he's just starting to get into music CDs. Cash is always good, as are gift cards.

When my son gets invited to a party, we've given movie theater gift certificates that include admission, popcorn & soda. It's a worthwhile gift that does not include a trip to a toy store!!!

It all depends on What the kid is into like if he likes sports or if he is into video games. Like you could always get him new equipment for the sports he plays like a new soccer ball if he is in to that sport. If he is into video game stuff then you could get him a new game for the system he has or something. Or if you have no idea what he likes you could always get him a random but cool board game or book as a practical joke and if he actually likes the book good for him.. Hope I helped a little

Legos. Preferably in a series he is interested in. For instance don't get him a Star Wars Lego set if he is into robots, get him a Bionicle or Exoforce set.

If you get a video game as some have suggested you do not feed creativity or stimulate the mind.

I'm trying to remember back 6 years ago when I got my friend presents for his birthday (we were both nine at the time). I gave him a combo of soccer ball, basketball, and football.

i think a boy of his age would like a mobile phone & they are not to expensive, if he has got one then get him a top up card for it, or just give him the cash then he can pick what he wants, my friends daughter has just got a mobile for her b/day she is 10, her grandparents bought her a MP3 player which she liked BUT what really excited her was when her other grandparents gave her a card with £5 in it, i now will give children the money they seem to like it more,
