I would say it was pretty scandalous for that time, yes. Not only was he ditching his fiancee for another woman, but the other woman was a governess who had intentions on becoming a nun!

Well, it wouldn't have made as interesting a story if he hadn't. But is anyone 'bad' for breaking an engagement that obviously is wrong for at least one of the parties involved? Don't think so! Sounds like common sense to me. That's what engagements are all about, finding out if this is the right life partner for you. That's why living together and having children together before marriage so often creates serious problems later in the relationship when things start to fall apart.

In reality, the babysitter actually took over the households even the captain's right to make decisions regarding his children and his life. The babysitter was bossy and a bit of a gold digger. The captain apparently ended a lost soul in his home thanks to the babysitter.

He made the absolute right choice.
Even though he was strict with his children he truly loved being with them.
The fiance had plans to send them off to boarding school because she didn't like the distraction and she wanted the baron all to herself. The baron would have been miserable with her.
Maria brought music and laughter and love into his home and he chose that over what the fiance was offering.
