I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out a week and 3 days ago. About a week ago I had excruciating pain on one side, found out it was a dry socket. I've been back 4 times since then and he packed it with the clove oil dressing. It's felt progressively better, so I went in for my appointment today, he pulled the clove dressing and said that we need to leave it out, otherwise it won't heal. Problem is that now I'm in terrible pain again. Ibuprofen 800 mg used to help but now it's not even making a dent. Has anybody else experienced this? How long does it take to go away? I'm wary to call back and and get the clove dressing, I want it to heal and if I tastes cloves again I'll just gag.

I'm irrigating it with the syringe, everytime I eat, after I wake up and before bed. I'm still doing the salt water thing, and carefully brushing my teeth/tongue to keep it clean. Still the pain continues..

Hello. I'm a Certified Dental Assistant and i've had all 4 wizzys extracted too. It will hurt for as long as there is any exposed bone. It will get progessively better day by day, but still be tender. It could take up to 2 weeks for it to feel normal. Everyone is different and it depends on how well/fast you heal.
They call it a dry socket because the blood clot that formed shortly after extraction was dislodged and did not fill up again, hence the exposed bone. Lots of pain and only filling in the hole with a smelly dressing will help the pain and help it heal. Unfortunately he's right, they have to take out the dressing sometime to allow tissue to form and fill in the hole. But if you are really in that much pain, call him and make him give you real drugs if you can take them. He might even be willing to put the dressing back in for another day or two. Usually we do it every day for 7 - 10 days. Hope this helps!

How long does dry socket pain from tooth extraction last?

I got all 4 wisdom teeth extracted 10 days ago. First and second day was CAKE, barely any pain. The third day I thought I was going to die from pain. I called my surgeon right away and he packed it, Felt better for about 12 hours. Then every single night I would wake up outta my sleep crying in pain! So in one week I went to him 3 times to pack the holes (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)

After 10 days of this EXCRUCIATING pain, my holes are still huge (I still have to eat soft food) which I have lost 6 pounds in 1 week. (Good? But not worth the pain!) I still wake up in the middle of the night crying in pain. So I have taken initiative and yesterday I went and bought me some Eugenol (clove oil) and decided to rub it back there. The pain will go away for about 2 hours and then come screaming back. No, pain meds dont work either. :(

Still hoping for a solution or to find out when all of this will end....... :(

I think he needs to pack it again. I have treated many dry sockets, and though I am not a dentist, I have never taken it out to let it heal. The kind I use desolves on its own though.

will the dry socket heal without going back to the dentist? I also have really bad breath.

I'm sorry. I don't think it took that long for me but I have a real high pain threshold. I'd call him back.

Call the dentist!!! You are paying for him to treat you. If you can't stand the clove dressing, I'm sure he can come up with something else.

you have to keep irrigating it with a syringe, like 4 times a day. that way it wont dry out.
