I'd have to say a Chihuahua. It was my husbands first dog and he loved the thing. He wasn't even a dog person.

One that fits your needs.
I don't know your needs, so for me to recommend any particular breed or type of dog would be irresponsible and meaningless. Take a look at your time, finances, living situation, activity level, neighborhood, and other assorted things and then figure out what might be best for you.
For example, if you live in an Apartment, a Boxer may not be great for you.
If you don't have a lot of time, a toy breed would not be good for you.
If you aren't an outdoors person (going for walks, going to the dog park), a energetic dog (Think Australian Shephard) won't be right for you.
If you don't like affectionate dogs, then a Lab won't be right for you.
If you can't spend alot monthly on food, then a Mastiff won't be right for you.
If you don't like a barking dog, then a Yorkie or a Sheltie won't be right for you.
If you don't like keeping your dog leashed, then a Whippet won't be right for you.
You get the idea. And remember, you need to have at least $1000 accessable at any time to deal with emergencies, illnesses, change in living situations, change in income.
A reputable breeder will help you make a good decision. A reputable breeder isn't about making the sale, it's about making sure that the dog gets a good home.
I've linked to a bunch of different sites that can help you make a well informed decision, help you find a reputable breeder, or help you find a dog that needs a second chance at life.
Good luck to you.

A shi tzu is good because it is small, and not very yappy. They all have different personalities, which makes them fun and exciting pets to have!

How about a Shih Tzu? They are sweet, cuddly and very, very easy to train. They also like being close to their owners so they are great companies on not so good days! :)
