We just adopted two cats both are four years old neutered & declawed After one week in our home the are still very jumpy even though the were raise together & we were told they could not be adopted separately one cat spends the entire day under the bed the other will socialize but while sitting on your lap for no reason will jumps up very aggressively and runs away. At one point he rip a gash in my wife leg while jumping off the chair. We really like the cats & would not like to bring the back to the shelter. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the cat world. My oldest cat is 4 years old and when he hears a loud noise or some one knocks on the door he will do the same thing. He then runs up the stairs growling like a dog. Cats are cats ..LOL
Clip their claws with a pair of nail clippers. Ours aren't declawed, but I clip their claws once a week. Takes about 5 minutes. The web below is for clipping guinea pigs but it works the same for cat claws.

That does really hurt when they launch...meooooooow

Give them some more time.....the adjustment period might be a bit longer. Our cats that we adopted from a shelter took a year before they would come and sit on our laps. You can't force them, and that might be the problem. Let them relax on their own time, and soon you will have two well adjusted kitties who will be thankful you were patient and didn't return them to the shelter.

It can take up to a month for cats to settle in. Give them time and attention. The one that is under the bed, lay on the floor and talk to it, let it get use to your voice. They will come around soon. Have the cat sit next to you so if it gets scared it won't scratch you if it gets scared.

It is still taking time for them to get adjusted. Just be patient with them and try to cut their nails to reduce gashes from sudden jumps.

If you believe in ghosts or spirits, then this will make sense. They can actually see things like that.

They are scraced. If you give them time to ajusted to their envoriment, they may hear or feel something you don't. That's normal. They will warm up to you soon.
