The fountain definitely has the "wow" factor, and people thoroughly enjoy it. However, you do have the task of having someone to oversee to make sure there is no double-dipping.
The already dipped sounds good, too...it can be elegantly placed in little packages for your guests.

I highly recommend letting your guests dip in the fountain. One of the main attractions of a chocolate fountain is interaction. The aroma of the flowing chocolate fondue fills the room and attracts guests like bees to honey. The interaction of your guests dipping is great fun. Look at any of the party pictures on the web and you will see guests interacting and having fun. Don't be too heavily motivated by fear of drips on clothing. Parties are meant for fun.
When Dipping ALWAYS use skewers or picks for the food items. As far as goodies to use, the most popular are fruits (with strawberries at the top), marshmallows (home made fruit flavored are a real treat), pretzels and chips (the salt and sweet are delicious). A good cookie to use is a plain, crisp almond or tea biscuit.
The American Chocolate Fountain manufactures a spout topper for chocolate fountains that lets you drizzle chocolate on plated servings of cake.

I think the chocolate fountain would look really cool. I thought about that for my wedding...just didn't have the $. But you have to remember how messy this could be. As far as people dripping chocolate on their clothes.....if this isn't a concern then I would do it. But if you have the fruit already dipped then that might be less mess. If your looking for classy....I would go for it! You could have cookies too. I had someone make mints for mine though...they were so good!

When we were in Hawaii, I had my first experience with a chocolate fountain. It was the MOST fun I'd had with chocolate with my clothes on!
But seriously, I would strongly recommend the fountain. I find them to be an elegant self-sustaining decoration that everyone can interact with. Use sugar cookies, fruits, small cake squares, or just about anything you can think of! Your caterer can be a huge help here.

I say fruit on the sticks so the people can dip it unless that will be extra work. But I also say that whatever will be the less amount of work for the staff/wedding party should be the way to go.
Yes cookies.

If the guests are anything like me, someone WILL drip chocolate down the front of themselves, and ruin their clothes, or at least their evening, so I'd go for the made beforehand.
And cookies?? well I guess it depends what type of reception. is it a wedding????
if so, you could have cookies cut into bell shapes, white glaze, and a group of three tiny silver sugar balls in the centre.
I love the sound of the chocolate though, wish I could be there....I'll travel miles for chocolate LOL SPECIALLY choc dipped strawberries...

FOUNTAIN! it's fun and a really pretty accent! have fruit (apples, pineapples, watermelon, and strawberry slices) and cookies, especially oreos! (yes, i've tried them all, and its FABULOUS!) just put the cookies on a tray but pre slice the fruit and put it on long sticks--they sell fondue sticks at wal mart and pretty much any other kitchen supply store. good luck! and by the way--it is totally sanitary, nobody's fingers touch the chocolate if you do it right!

individual dipped fruit cuz the little kids might wanna stick their nasty fingers into the fountain and thats gross. if there is individual fruit then the parents will get it for them. and cookies sound good for every age.

I think for guests to see the chocolate fountain and for them to try it is more interesting and fun! Cookies will be great, maybe in heart shape or bell shape and in different colors :)

Pre-dipped items. Chocolate fountains are messy, usually too sweet, and the thought of double dipping and smart alecks who use their fingers in them freaks me out.
