We're all correct. The answer is indeed anencephaly, Greek for "without brain". It's a congenital absence of major portions of the brain and malformations of the brainstem. The cranium does not close and the vertebral canal remains a groove. And you're also correct in that this condition is not compatible with life (fatal). It can be detected early by use of amniocentesis and analysis or by ultrasonography.

Finaldx is right. Its not just the top of the skull thats missing though, most of the cerebral hemispheres (the larger part of the brain) is also missing or grossly maldeveloped.
