If you have a 20 month old who is not yet using words I would highly recommend you go get an evaluation with a speech therapist.

Things that do help include imitating exaclty what he/she tries to say just like when they were younger. Have them look at and feel your face when you are talking.

But, if you are concerned (even if your Dr. is not) just go get an eval. Most big hospitals have speech therapists and most insurance will cover an eval. even if they don't cover therapy.

Well I was talking to my mom about this just yesterday. She told me that I didn't say a word until I was 3 years old nor did I have any teeth yet either. They tried hard to get me to talk and I just wouldn't do it. Then all of a sudden I started talking and as she said---haven't stopped since. LOL

i think she should be talking more at 20 months
read to her; talk to her; do not get her something she wants unless she tries to say the word; take her to a play group that has children who talk; do not spoil her--make her talk; put her fingers on your throat as you say words; praise her when she says words; watch sesame street.
maybe she has a hearing problem? or an ear problem?
or maybe you should enjoy the quiet while it lasts

The best way to get them to learn to talk sooner is.... Whenever your child points or says "uhhhh" when he wants something, make him attempt to say the word. Just name the item that he wants and tell him to say it. Don't give him the item until he attempts to say something. Even if it sounds nothing like it. Make him attempt to say it. Eventually he will learn the words. Good luck....:)
