When a bird hits a window there's a possiblity that it could break or fracture its neck.

Also, it isn't usual for a bird to throw up (I've never heard of a bird doing this-unless it's some kind of bird that spits up pellets, like an owl).

And are you saying you released it downstairs indoors? Or outdoors?

The best thing to do when a bird hits a window is to leave it alone. If it's disoriented it will get better on its own. Moving it could make it panic, and if it's heart rate jumps too high it will die of a heart attack. If it broke it's neck, then there isn't anything you can do for the bird.

Just keep the bird in a calm and quite environment (a bird can and will die if it is stressed too much!) where there are no dangers of it harming itself. I would tell you to apply DMSO solution (found in feed stores) to the birds head to reduce swelling in case there were any, but that would need to be done within a few hours after the impact. All the advise I know to give at this time, is to wait and see how the bird is in the morning. If he seems okay and able to fly, he should then be released. If he is unable to fly or seems extremely injured, you may post to my website forum for more help or advise: http://www.starlingrescueandcare.bravehost.com or email me at audrarose1977@aol.com .

I once rescued a small catbird that was struck down in mid air by a very fast passing vehicle. I immediately applied the DMSO, placed the bird in a box with food & small water dish in a quite room. The next morning he was fine and was able to be released back into the wild.

I do know however, if you take the bird into a vet, it will more than likely be taken from your care and euthanized! The reason for this is because it is illegal to have, care for, or own a bird of native species. Most clinics will just put them down if they are injured and unable for release, unless the species is on the brink of extinction. Do you know what type of bird you have? Starlings, sparrows and pigeons are not native species and can be treated at a vet clinic if taken in as a pet.

Hope that helps!
Sincerely, Audra

It may have gotten a concussion. But if it was able to fly away it will probably be OK -- if not, nature will take its course quickly.

Now for prevention: Why do birds fly into windows in the first place? Because the window reflects the surrounding scenery, so they don't recognize the glass as a danger. To help prevent birds from flying into windows, add a "danger warning" by cutting out a black silhouette of a hawk and taping it to the inside of the window. This site has a photo and a pre-fab plastic one you can buy if you don't want to make your own or want something more durable:

If you were in a car accident and slammed into the windshield would you be ok? Chances are you would need some medical attention. Call animal control or look in the phone book for wildlife rescue groups. They will assess the bird and try to rehabilitate if needed. Never try to capture the animal on your own. They could be carrying a disease or when frightened could cause harm to you.

It depends how severe the injury is. If it broke its neck, it will die. Don't bother trying to save it. I used to save birds that ran into my window all the time and the same result happened--they make it, and it was pointless (and stressful for the bird) or they die. So my advice is this: find a shady, calm spot in your backyard and drop the bird off there. If you find it dead later, put it in a zip lock bag and toss it as to prevent disease (slim chance, but just to be careful...)

I've had many birds. You should never keep a bird because it will die, because its not getting the same nutrients. My advice is that you should either let it go, or if it seems like it is truly hurt, then take it to a vet/humiane society.

It's probably concussed.
It'll probably be ok, as long as it didn't fracture its skull or anything. If it flys it'll be ok.

Don't bother taking it to a vet or anything. I used to do that with injured birds, and it wasn't till years later I found out the vet would just wring it's neck (cruel to be kind) as they are hard to fix.

If it can fly, it will probably be okay. If it can't fly even after 30 minutes or so, it is probably injured.

If you still have it, take it to a wildlife rehabilitation clinic. This site http://www.wildlife-international.org/EN/public/emergency/emergencyrehab.html can help you find one near you.

not_mn_nice has a good suggestion for preventing this from happening.
