To those who say we cannot make a difference, If everyone fed even one poor person how much of a differrence would that make?
"Two thousand, one hundred verses in the Bible talk about God's love and concern for the poor and our mandate to deal with it. That's more than the verses [about] heaven and hell combined. This is clearly in the heart of God."

"It is not how much we do,
but how much love we put in doing.
It is not how much we give,
but how much love is put in the giving."
--Mother Theresa
DO you also know that many of the poor today are the poor at spirit or heart? Those who can find nothing positive to live.

Actually the program I think working best is the one where in some countries the poor are given goats to help provide for them in the long run. But there are manh worthwhile activities underway.

I noticed the quotes you have here, and they are both Christian. But keep in mind, Christians aren't the only ones who help when they can. I am personally involved in a charity benefit right now to help a single mother suffering from ovarian cancer, I donate what I can to the Salvation Army, Good Will and yes, Christian Ministries. I also buy the food boxes located at our local grocery store when I have the extra money that donates the proceeds to starving children around the world.
And like the person said earlier about the working poor, well I fall into that category but as I was raised so do I try to raise my children. There are times when you must put someone else before your own needs. I agree, I everyone would get involved, then the difference we would make would be amazing!

That's a great quote and one I believe in.
I don't know the answer to your question as to whether it would make a difference if everyone helped one poor person. I don't know the answer to curing poverty, and no one else has yet to discover a method either.
But just because we have no answer does not mean we should stop asking the question.
I have done a range of things to help the poor, like many people do--donate food, clothes, money, whatever. I have worked in a an inner city mission -- where I learned that "the poor" have much to teach us --about the world, about ourselves.
I think that the Bible's focus on the poor is a good one -- if we get to know who is poor and marginalized in society, begin to see them as human beings not so different from ourselves, and begin to comprehend the reasons why they have become impoverished, we might begin to look at how we structure society and how we might begin to envision ways to make our socio-economic system work for all kinds of people, not just those who are privileged and have the ability to work.

Yes, I do help the poor - particularly children who come from impoverished families, so that they might have access to the supplies they need to acquire a good education which will, hopefully, help them to find a higher standard of living.
I think that a greater question is why doesn't the United States government work to eliminate poverty in this country? The Federal minimum wage has not been raised in almost a decade. The majority of families in the U.S. must have both parents working just to be able to survive. Most homes in the U.S. are out of the financial reach of many hard-working Americans, and the prices of real estate just keeps going up. Growing numbers of families cannot afford basic health care. Perhaps it's because of "the iron law of wages" (Ricardo, 1817).
Ok - I'll get off my "liberal soap-box" now. I agree that we should help the poor, but charity is not a long-term solution, regardless of what the Bible says about it.

I have to agree with Mother Theresa. The importance is not in what we give and how our gift may be used (or misused). It's in our willingness in our heart to help someone who asks for help or obviously needs it.
I've been involved as volunteer in helping refugees to start a new live in their new strange surroundings, ever since the "Boot People" from the Vietnam war. I can tell you, it's rewarding to see the appreciation in their eyes! There are other occasional causes where I help out, as "caring and sharing" for instance. It gives you a feeling of being REALLY useful, more so than doing a good job at your workplace.

I don't love the poor, and I don't believe in a God. I believe in humanity, and have always been involved in charity work. I currently work for a free meals van, a animal association and a service helping kids with homework. Everybody has a choice, to help or not.

"The Poor" is a very general group...however, in general, yes...I 'love' the poor. I've been involved over the years in various activities which 'help' them as well, including Habitat for Humanity.

yes give them a bible, change their religion by bribing in money and promise of heaven. Then dump them to the hell again no wonder nobody goes to church in the western world.
