What are some things that a girl might do (but not really aware she's doing it) that would make a guy decide not to approach her? On the flip side, what can a girl do to appear very approachable to a guy?

Well, it is kind of different per person.
If a person is extrovert and you confront them and talk to them a lot, they will feel uncomfortable by you, but if you give them eye contact and a smile they will feel they should say something. Extroverts like to be around a lot of people, but if you talk to them only, they feel isolated from everyone else.
If a person is introvert and you just give eye contact and a smile they may smile back and look into your eyes, but they will not approach you, if you are alone with them and talk to them a lot they will feel you are approachable and open up to you about themselves. Introverts like being alone, and they will like being alone with some one they like.
There are no perfect introverts and extroverts, everyone is some where in between. And what it comes down to is that opposites attract, and they also like to force the others to do things they normally wouldn't, such as forcing an introvert to go out with friends, or forcing an extrovert to have a romantic dinner. It's complementary in that way rather then dualistic.

Guys find women who they think would reject them as unapproachable. If you're very pretty, give off an air of confidence, etc, these are things a man may find makes you unapproachable. Easy smiles, lots of laughter makes you more approachable.
honestly it has less to do with you than it does their own self confidence so I wouldn't worry about it. Any man worth your time is going to do what he needs to do to get your attention the RIGHT way.

eye contact is a key element here. the more eye contact you make with a person, and the more open your body language (arms not crossed, smiling, talking, laughing...) the more approachable you may seem. Most guys do not like drama, so if you have the impression that all men like a woman who seems disinterested, think again. the more positive you are, the more likely you will be to find the right guy.

Unapprochable girls are usually do things that are very isolating like sitting alone, or looking down all the time not wanting to make eye contact probably has a serious look on their face. Or they are really really pretty and look unatainable.
Approchable girls look make eycontact and has a 'glint' in their eye. (i.e If you look at a girl and she looks back and then smiles when she looks the other way)The have a smile on their face or they look very content. They make you feel as if you wnet up to them the would invet you with open arms and engage in a polite conversation with you. In other words, they give you an opening to approch them

To me a girl seems unapproachable if she doesn't smile or look my way. As you said, on the flip side, if a girl smiled and looked at me, I might take it as an opportunity to say something, to try to start a conversation.

I think a person is approachable when they a good sense of self....meaning...they have welcoming gestures and facial expressions
A girl might avoid eye contact, make herself constantly busy, or keep to herself. Doing the opposite might be her flip side

Being serious all the time makes you appear unapproachable. Try to smile more often and let everyone hear your laugh!

I have heard that men don't like it when girls are with a bunch of friends. I would suggest smiling and laughing. Be friendly with the people outside your group. Give eye contact to the person you are interested in and smile.

Body language is everything and speaks volumes. Be aware of how you might be coming off to the people around you. Most importantly, be yourself the right guy wont be scared off.
