Just curious... it seemed so prevalent long ago and I don't even know how it got SPREAD...

It's still around, but one thing changed to take away the direness of the problem of leprosy.

Science discovered an actual CURE for leprosy last century. :)

"Leprosy can be cured with multidrug therapy (MDT) a combination of antibiotics. MDT drugs are rifampin, clofazimine, and dapsone. Treatment can take from six months to a year, sometimes longer." - Leprosy.org

Leprosy is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae and this bacteria can be killed by antibiotics. In the olden days they did not have antibiotics to treat this with. Leprosy is also called Hansen's Disease. Also, the bacteria is related to the organism that caused TB: Mycobacterium tuberculae.

With a knife - I much prefer easy spread to normal butter - it's to hard to spread from the fridge !
