I have a Golden too. Some Goldens are prone to Hot Spots and there are several reasons they get them. Matted fur, flea & insect bites, sometimes on the face when they have ear mites or an ear infection. They are oozy red spots that start off about the size of a quarter and can get really big. They are painful. It's best to go to the vet for an antibiotic and a spray like Genetian Violet to help dry them.

The hairless spots on the legs are caused by your dog licking or chewing on the spot. It's not serious. By the time you notice it the hair is already starting to grow back. Again, there are a lot of reasons for the dog doing this, usually a combination of boredom and allergies. My Golden will chew like crazy at his paws right after the grass is cut. I've found that rinsing his paws helps a lot.

Don't feed him a cheap dog food. If you give him the better foods like Innova, California Natural, etc., you'll find that Hot Spots & most of the allergies will be a thing of the past. Those foods are expensive, but you feed them less because they don't have all the nasty fillers that are in cheap foods.

Hot spots usually start when a flea or something bites a dog, it can be a large dog or small dog. Then the dog starts chewing on it and won't leave it alone. They can get infected. If it is infected you will need antibiotics to clear it up. If it is just at the starting stages, wash with warm soapy water and don't let the dog chew on it any more even if you have to bandage it. But just having a bald spot on the leg doesn't mean it is a hot spot. Has the dog ever had hair there before?

Let me qualify myself-I think I know what I am talking about, not 100% positive. Hot spots occur on long haired dogs when hair is matted close to the skin. The tissue under the matt becomes hot, inflamed and infected ,as a result of the heat I suppose. What you're describing sounds more like mange to me. Careful because if it is you too can become infected. Best to see a Vet. Hope I helped.

Hot spots are pretty common on larger breed dogs. They lose hair in the spot and it can get kind of raw and gooey looking.

Washing it with a betadine shampoo can help to dry it up.
