YUMA, Ariz. - A sport utility vehicle crammed with suspected illegal immigrants rolled over in an attempt to outrun Border Patrol agents, killing nine people and injuring at least 12 others, officials said.

Five of the injured were in critical condition, most with head trauma, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The large SUV was carrying up to 22 people when the driver had tried to circumvent a checkpoint on the highway, Border Patrol spokesman Lloyd Frers said.

With Border Patrol agents in pursuit, the driver attempted to make a U-turn and rolled over, Frers said. He did not know how fast either vehicle was traveling.

"The suburban was grossly overloaded, and it's difficult to handle on that kind of (dirt) road," Frers said.

Sheriff's Maj. Leon Wilmot said the car had swerved to avoid a spike strip put out by Border Patrol agents.

Scores of illegal immigrants die each year while crossing the Mexican border into Arizona, many in car crashes. Smugglers often flee from authorities at high speeds or overload vehicles, which makes them difficult to control.

"They just pile in; they're like sardines," Frers said. "It's unfortunate."

Three of the injured were expected to be admitted to Yuma Regional Medical Center, but their conditions were not known, spokeswoman Machele Headington said. Three others were treated and released to the custody of Border Patrol, she said.

The Yuma area, a sandy stretch of desert in southwestern Arizona, has become the nation's busiest immigrant-smuggling hotspot. President Bush visited the area in May as part of his push for a sweeping overhaul of immigration laws.

Last month, after a crackdown on illegal border crossing, the Border Patrol's Yuma Sector reported a 48 percent drop in migrant arrests — from 11,522 in June 2005 to 6,030 in June this year.

At least the border patrol didn't have to waste bullits.

The act it's self was foolish I am pro-illegal but not PRO-Stupidity
And no I don't think they got what they deserved. If they had made it across with thought and not stupidity then so be it. I saw no where in the article that the Border Patrol did anything wrong in trying to stop the people.

About the same as the woman who died off Florida when the Coast Guard tried to pull the boat over and the smugglers made a run for it.

It is a real shame.

Unfortunately, that is what happens when you run from the law, I understand.

I wouldn't know, never having run from the law.

Have you?

The same way I would feel if a group of American citizens had just robbed a bank and were fleeing from law enforcement.
You reap what you sow. Don't break the law and you won't have to worry about running from the law. Its too simple really.

Whenever illegal anything is running away from the police and gets into trouble, it's a choice that they made.
Immigrants from any country have no problem or hardship when they keep everything legal.

Don't run, it's not worth it! What if they would have slammed into someones family? How about someone you love? Their life would have been over! All over lawbreaking illegals that think this is a game! Sometimes I think it must be a game and then I remember......How many Americans die every year at the hand of illegal aliens...nothing funny about that!

Thats nine less than we will ever have to deal with. The other three are getting free medical care at tax payers expense so is a win-win situation or a win-lose situation?

At least another 12 are in Arizona hospitals, which are already overburdened. No doubt some taxpaying American citizens are going to be turned away from those hospitals because there is no room for them because of this incident.

To PK (above): "The Government should pay compensation to their family." Huh? U.S. taxpayers should pay for foreign nationals' illegal behavior? How does that make sense?? And now the citizens of Yuma will have to pay their hospital bills? Where is this going to end?

It's wrong to say that jaywalking is punishable by death, but sometimes if somebody jaywalks, they get killed by a car.

They made a choice to come here against our laws, under harsh circumstances. They attempted a dangerous thing, and sometimes people die when they do dangerous things.
