I think Bailey's Irish Cream is about the only thing alcoholic that would taste good in coffee. So it would be pointless to specialize in coffee/alcohol. But some bars do have coffee pots and will make you an Irishcoffee!

On the east coast of the US, there was a hip chain in the late 90s called XandO (caused a word-of-mouth stir by people wondering if it was called "X-and-O" or "[Z]ando"). Lounge chairs and a small bar area with barstools (open after 4pm) complemented the daytime coffee shop/sandwiches atmosphere. When it opened, they specialized in coffee cocktails. It was bought/merged with Cosi a few years back, but I thought the concept was brilliant then.

As a bartender, my reasoning is clear: bars = many drinks; coffee shops usually mean one drink purchase. Coffee cocktails - somewhere in-between, but usually leads closer to one drink purchase than many...

Good observation. In San Francisco there's a bar that specializes in Irish Coffee: Buena Vista. It's a hoot.

I agree. The US really needs to catch on to the coffee shop/bar combo (like XandO). I'm guessing that regular coffee shops don't carry alcohol bc the license is so expensive.

You're the first person I've come across to ask this question, and it's actually a good one. I think you've provided me with a great idea for a business to open when I retire.

I have thought of this many times... Maybe there just aren't enough people willing to drink caffeine and liquor to get a buzz, but it sounds good to me.

Not a lot of people really like hot alcoholic beverages.
