You have to listen and you have to know basic music theory. If you know chords that helps and you have to practice your scales. . Get he Cd or record the song you want to learn, listen to it, and try to play the notes you hear. You also have to have a good ear, especially when combining the left and right hand. That's when learning about chords helps.

I was just like you before and I was told by my piano teacher that it is a very common problem for people who pick up the piano (or any other musical instruments) through note reading. See it as just a phase. The more you play, the more you practise, the more you listen to the sounds of the notes and the more you put your mind to it, the faster you will get over that phase. It really comes with practice. Good luck!

hi! Im a child and i cannot play by notes, but by ear. There are no tips to playing by ear. It depends on what you are used to. If you have always used music sheets i suggest you go on using music sheets for it will be VERY difficult for you to try ear. I have always been able to play things such as chopsticks or Fur Elise by what i press the noise it makes.

dont think about it. i can read a little bit but i mainly play by ear. listen to the note and find it on the piano. its also good to have a keyboard so you can sit w/ the keyboard in front of the radio and as you are sitting there, find the key of the song on the piano and play the chord. then try to decipher the solos. i learned the fur elise by beetoven by just listening to a ringtone on my moms celphone.

make sure you know the sound of the notes on the piano really well then it would be easier. its also easy to just play around and see if it sounds like it.

read a book on sight-reading and ear training. when i hear songs i see the notes on the scale, and i can recognize the intervals at which the notes are jumping (from do-sol, mi-la)
.. therefore i can play by ear. (this is hard to explain briefly, so just buy a book or message me)

I play by ear. I really bruise the side of my head though.
But seriously,
Jimi Hendrix also played by ear.
Go for it
