Well, I have a fifteen year old boy with a five year old brother and they get annoyed with each other rather quickly. However, I have an older daughter (20) who dotes on her youngest brother immensely. I think the answers to this question are going to vary greatly. There are too many possible circumstances that affect sibling relationships. Since this is a book you are writing, the relationship is going to have to depend on the family situation in your book. If it's a loving family, the relationship is going to be somewhat hostile between the older sibling and the younger one due to jealousy issues. If it's a broken family with alot of drama, chances are the older sibling is going to be doting on the younger one to protect him. I'm just going by case history and what I've seen in the last 14 years working with children.

It would really add to the story I think.

An 18 year old would be protective and tend to teach the 5 year old. He usually wouldn't get annoyed with him. He would act more as an uncle who adores the child. The 5 year old would look up to his older brother.

I have two nephews who are 10 years apart. The youngest one is thinking of living with the older one while he (the younger) goes to college. The relationship is a little different than with bros who are close in age.

Good luck with your story.

If you're going to write fiction, you need to give us more description.

Who?
When?
Where?

Characters histories?

Then we can give you feedback

Those two ages can interact in broadly different ways.
