I currently go to a Catholic School, and have been there since kindergarten. (I'm in 8th grade now- yes, I know it's a pretty long time to be at one school.) I am thinking about applying to a few selective enrollment/magnet public high schools, and I was just wondering if someone could explain the process to me and give me a few tips.

Also, something I forgot to mention: We take the Terra Novas (I did well on them), but I wanted to know if this makes a difference.

I went to a great Catholic school up through 8th grade. I too switched to public school for 9th grade on. Then I went on to college.

What I can tell you is that public schools on average lag behind private ones. They didn't know what to do with me when I transferred in. I was so far ahead of the other students, and I'm no genius.

Public schools also have no discipline and almost impossible to fire teachers. That translates into poor work ethic and regular class disruptions. Teachers with tenure don't care because they can't get fired, so they lose interest. The few good teachers are squashed by bureaucratic adminstrators who only care about budgets and the status quo.

Be prepared for classrooms with no enough books or books that are damaged or wrong. Be prepared for little or no field trips. Public schools spend their money on sports, not intelligent after school activities.

I got into college and did terribly. Suddenly I was the one lagging way behind my classmates! I had no study skills because I had 4 years of boredom and easy A's. And my high school was #2 in the district and it was a very good district.

Personally if it were me to do all over again, I'd never go to a public high school. Why not look for a private school? There are some great schools that have special programs to prepare you for a specialized major.

What city do you live in? In St. Louis The school board is a vaudeville show. Great fun and entertainment but not good for the kids. But one of St. Louis' magnet schools did make the list of top fifty in the nation. I think it was the arts and entrtanement school but I'm not sure. So if you want to go to a magnet school think what kind of school board your city has and what kind of magnet school you want to go to. Some magnet schools are better than others, depending on the subject matter. Good luck.
