The very first "brand" of whisky would be near impossible to trace, however it was the Irish who discovered the art of distilling whisky, around the time of Christian civilization. The egyptians were known to have practised distillation for perfumes around 3000BC however not of whisky, that was the Irish.

It wasn't known as whisky initially, it was Uisge Beatha or Usquebaugh. Which eventually transformed into Uisge then Uisky before become Whisky.

Edit: Bushmills Distillery was the first to be granted a license to distill whisky in 1608, however the oldest brand of whisky I believe is Coleraine Malt Whisky, which now is also distilled at the Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim.
