What is rated 1-2-3-4-5, is not always the best buy for your money. I use an antivirus/spyware that you don't see or hear that much about. An it is not rated.
www.filseclab.com Twister Anti-TrojanVirus -- This is a software company out of Beijing, China. You pay a small one time fee and you never pay an annual fee or any fee for new versions. Plus you will get automatic updates of about 3600 trojans per week. An any an all new versions of this software. If there is an urgent need they will update more then once per week.
Has an auto scanner that scans in the background an every time you boot up your system it will scan your system and memory. Uses very little resources.
If you open a webpage with a virus embedded in the page the background scanner will catch it and clean the virus. If you download , music, files etc. etc. and their are embedded with a virus in any of the files this antivirus program will catch it and stop the download and clean.
Plus it will even trace the trojan or keylogger back to the person that embedded the virus. Also finds embedded viruses in the installer program used to guide you through the installation. And will stop the installation of the program and clean. Plus trace back the source.
Support is great. Best part is you have this software for life for a one time fee. My profession as a volunteer doctor requires me by law to keep my pc 100% clean. An I can say in eight years plus I have never been hit with a virus that was not caught and cleaned on the spot by Twister.
You can even send them any virus their system finds and they will be back to you in the same day or the next day with detailed info., on the virus.
China has excellent technology an I take advantage of their knowledge.
Plus I fail to understand why spyware an antivirus companies expect you to purchase and then pay an annual fee for updates or new versions. There is just no logic in this attitude other then wanting to get rich quck. They make tons of money with all of their daily downloads.

Avg free edition is very good. Here are some URL and etails for this and some spyware that is also free.
Antiviral. (free)
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Anti-spyware (all free)
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
Spycatcher
http://www.tenebril.com/consumer/spyware/spycatcher-express.php
PC starter kit at download.com 20 of the best recommended programes for people new or less advanced in computers. Check all three pages, at bottom see Security/Tools/Fun
http://www.download.com/PC-Starter-Kit/2001-12350_4-0.html?tag=dir
C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.

AVG is what we use to clean corporate systems, one network at a time!
If you ran PCLinux, you wouldn't have virus definitions, that's why Microsoft.com, hotmail.com, and MSN.com all run Linux on their 15,000 computers, EACH!
Microsoft threw in the towell, and hasen't released a new functional OS since XP, almost 7 years ago!
Everyone needs to move along to a virus free, hacker proof OS, that includes over 5,000 FREE games, programs, applications, office suites!

AVG free edition for personal PC use. www.grisoft.com
The free edition does an impressive job at snagging and cleaning pesky viruses from your PC. The updates are FREE, too--and AVG can automatically run updates and scan your PC during those off times when you are away from your PC (if it's left online).

Norton is a good one if you want to buy it or PC Tools anitvirus, but if you do not want to pay AVG is a great one and finds some that even Norton won't.
