I wrote a couple days ago about my dog. She is still sick but doing much better. They are still questioning the mass on x-ray that may or may not be a tumor. The vet could feel no mass during the physical. She has high liver enzyme levels.
I believe it is her ALT readings. What should her diet be? All the adice I get contradicts each other. Going in for more tests on Thursday. The latest vet feels the high liver levels may be because of digestive problems than liver disease. If anyone has experience with this and knows what diet I could cook for her--please let me know.

E.R vet suggested a canned bland dogfood--but it had so many additives, preservatives, by products and chicken meal that I was hesitant. Our vet was mainly concerned that we got her to eat something and then work on the problems and issues for a diet in a few days. He suggested canned pumpkin, eggs, and hamburger. I think I am going to go first with those who suggested boiled hamburger and white rice. Thanks to all who answered.

Has she seen a vet? If not, please get that dog to a vet. But since you're hear asking, I'm going to assume she's seen one. She's also very old, so that could be why she's sick. If she gets worse, considering her age, you may have to put her down. I know that's not what you want to hear, but not being able to hold down food is one of the first signs of a senior dog deteriorating. For now, though, try feeding her boiled chicken (without the bone) and rice. Buy a canine supplement (they have some at PetSmart) to pour over the food if you plan on feeding it long term. Many vets will tell you to give a sick dog chicken and rice and it really does help. If all she's eating is burger, though, she may not eat it. Don't give her eggs or bacon. If she did eat it, she would likely not be able to hold it down. If she doesn't eat the chicken and rice, try giving her green beans that are boiled until they're VERY soft. Only feed this for a day - NO LONGER as it is not species appropriate. It just helps their stomach and doesn't keep them full so that A) they can't throw it up and B) they'll be more than willing to eat when you give them their regular food. (It doesn't work for all dogs, but it got my dog eating the very next day when she was sick.) ETA: Also, boil the rice until it's REALLY mushy. Like, boil longer than you would for a human.

I also had a sick pup and my vet recommended the chicken or beef with rice meal. It settled her stomach and I still give it to her when she is feeling bad. Something else you may want to check out..I received an email about using the swiffer jet cleaner (not sure if thats exactly what its called) since it is supposedly made with the same components of antifreeze it can raise the liver counts of dogs which could cause alot of problems. Not sure how true the email is but I'm not taking any chances!!

Get some very lean ground beef or skinless, boneless chicken, boil till very well done-Drain and rinse well. Mix with cooked plain old white rice. No butter or and oil or anything. This diet is tolerated very well in sick, dehydrated dogs, and dogs with serious tummy issues. Start with a small bit at one time. I would mix up a bunch-and then keep the dog on this diet for a few days. Just microwave it till it's just warm, not hot. Hope it helds. Good Luck!

Need to know what is wrong first, someone suggested different vet, I agree and I am a firm believer of a holistic vet. Holistic healing in my experience has been most helpful. Traditional vets give you medications that may help the current problem but sometimes cause damage to another organ. PLEASE READ all the side effects on the medicine before giving to your dog. When I go to traditional vet and he/she suggest medications I ask on side effects first. Usually I go home and check on line to look-up medicine. The reason for this is that one time I believed them and accepted the medicine, went home read all the horrible side effects, tried to give medicine back that wasn't opened and they would not take it back. Their reason was it was against the law. This may be so but they were not honest and I lost the money as I threw medicine away. Also threw away that vet office.

My vet.....(also known as my husband) says that for sick dogs its best to boil some hamburger and white rice, let cool and hope they will eat it. Larger dogs tend not to eat the rice but will attempt to eat the hamburger where as puppies seem to love all it. Try this, but why did your vet not tell you what to feed your dog?

A vet told me long ago that to boil ground beef until it is cooked and make white rice. Mix them together and it should be something your poor little doggie can keep down.

I hope you find out soon what is wrong. I know you must be worried sick.

Well I have found in past with having dogs, when all else fails, feed babyfood, (rice cereal is wonderful for sick dogs), baby food is pure and doesn't have all the crap and perservatives in it as other foods, also a diet of bland and puree'd foods boiled not fried, good luck!

All your trips to the vet and he didn't give you a diet for her? Well, one thing that is calming to a dogs stomach is a can of chicken and rice soup. You can call and ask your vet, it is easy for them to digest.

Plain scrambled eggs....no salt or pepper and let them get cold before the dog gets them. cook 1, let the dog eat....see how it goes and if OK make him some more in an hour or two.
Good protein and gives a shiny coat.
