No one can teach you any real self-defense on line. I think for this, we have to know you, we have to see you in action and see what your strengths and weaknesses are. I'll still say this, I think one of the best defenses is looking confident. You've got to make eye contact, but without looking like you want a challenge. Even if you pass a group of scary lookin dudes, make eye contact, just enough to say "I see you, and I'm not afraid of you." Experts say that you should always let people know that you are aware of where they are. If someone wants to attack you, they usually want to take you by surprise, they can't do that if you are looking straight at them. When you feel strong inside, it shows on the outside...that is what you should work on first. Some other handy things are to know where those painful pressure points are, you can find these in books. I highly recommend martial arts. If you do chose to take lessons, take time to observe first and find something you will really like...that will help a lot.

Go and visit all of your local schools, every school, every style and watch the classes. There are alot of different arts and no one art is right for everyone. Find something that interests you and take classes. Most schools will let you take a free class to see if you like it.
Good luck and have fun.

if you want to be able to fight really good don't take Karate, or Kung Fu, if you take these you may as well take a yoga class for self defense.
Take Ju-Jitsu, Muai Tai Kickboxing and if you want to learn how to take weapons and things from people Krav Maga is pretty cool.
