So fat people are found only in America? You have been to every other country on Earth and have personally seen no fat people at all?
All overweight people, no matter where they live, are that way because they eat more calories than they use. Some are just sedentary and thus are not burning the calories they take in, and some even though they work and hustle, are simply eating way more than they burn off. Greed has very little to do with it. A rich guy could be skinny as a rail eating caviar, while another (poor possibly) could be huge eating beans and cornbread. Indeed, I think starchy foods (such as beans and cornbread) lead to more obesity than does meat (which gets a bad rap mostly from vegetarians---and there are a lot of those who are fat!).
Some people are big due to their genes. Some due to just over eating. If we would stop our consumption of highly processed foods (took out all the MSG and sodium phosphates!), we'd be healthier and probably more energetic to go out and get some exercise and burn up an equal number of calories as what we take in.
And...some people are just plain damn LAZY! (USA and elsewhere!)

Remember Mel, you are American too...lol. In America, it is the lifestyle. The lifestyle accounts for everything. We rely on machines too much. We are sooooo lazy and spend almost all of the time either sitting down or laying down. There is no exercise at all. Even at work, people would rather get their arm cut off, then walk across the room to deliver a message. I mean come on, we are so lazy that we call or email the guy sitting in the next cubicle. We sit in front of the TV or compouters and soooo much time is wasted commuting. The other factor in our lifestyle is eating habits. We definitely live to eat. I can't remember the last time I truly experienced hunger. There is sooooo much food around us that is full of fat and grease. Junk food is the best business to be in and now even in restaurants, the portions are bigger than ever. I have worked in the fast food industry and it is actually more expensive to try to get a smaller portion. When you try to break up some meal combo/deal and get things individually, it costs you a lot more. So you either pay a lot more, or get more food but then waste it. I mean a muffin today could have easily fed a family of four a hundred years ago. Soda companies like Coke and Pepsi are raking in billions in profits so what do you expect?

First of all, not all Americans are fat. But the increasing percentage of those who are overweight or obese is frightening, especially among children. Americans are getting larger for a number of reasons. First, our lifestyle has become sedentary. Office jobs are more common than labor jobs, recess time has been cut down at most schools, and we spend more and more time in front of our televisions, computers, and video games. We just don't get up and move often enough. Second, America has a "fast-food" mentality. Most American's either don't like to cook or don't have time, so they turn to fast, convenient alternatives such as fast food restaurants or pre-packaged, pre-prepared meals. These foods are usually high in fat, cholesterol, and sodium and low in necessary nutrients. Third, America has a big emphasis on "bigger is better." We do not limit our intake of food. We super-size our meals at McDonald's, we buy King Size candy bars, and drink large sodas. Most Americans have forgotten the meaning of moderation.

Big boned? Are you just genetically stupid. That's a preschool term used by people who don't know that there's no such thing. It has nothing to do with genetics. There are fat people eveywhere except in coutries where the school systems aren't good enough to teach children to accel.I'm an American and I've never been fat.I also know that big boned isn't a term recognized by any science.

The fat people are mostly in rural areas. Americans don't get as much exercise because we are so dependent on cars. It's also easy to get fat here if you don't consciously make good food choices. There's so much junk everywhere. I'm not blaming obesity on any third party. If you're fat, it's your own responsibility to exercise and eat well, not McDonald's and not anybody else.

The diet is based on carbs that just turn to sugar and make more insulin, lowering metabolism hence fatter people. PLus food companies put sugar (too much) into everything. That and very few get any excersise. Eat raw foods, vegetables and get of your ****!
Fat people are the most disgusting site. It represents lazy, uneducated ignorance.

What's at every corner? You cant go some were without passing these fast food restaurants. Its easy to just pull up in and get a 2200 calorie lunch. Then on they way home you don't feel like cooking so its easy to pick the family up a bucket of fried chicken.

Just fat. We still have the eating habits of a farming society, (three large meals + bedtime snack) but we sit in an office all day and don't work it off.

It's not just Americans - here in Australiua I believe we are on a very big roll towards obesity - starting in our childhood. Our lifestyle makes us lazy and unhealthy. Will we get it right - I hope so.
