If I am diagnosed with cyclothymia I am worried about the side affects of the prescription meds and would enjoy hearing other alternatives that effectively manage this mood disorder.

I had a terrific counselor once, but after 8 yrs, I moved. She was one in a million, but perhaps you could find one. There were a few yrs I was prescription-free when I was seeing her.
I hope you understand that it is dangerous for you to take herbal meds. I have been hospitalized twice for reaction to incorrect medications/herbal products.
I do not think I have ever met someone with our disorder who wasn't afraid of medical side affects. What I know is : Depakote is a safe drug, unless you have had seizures sometime in your life. Depakote can cause Tardive Dyskinesia, but that is no big thing. It IS a big thing if you become more depressed, or if you swing into a high range of mania. I would much rather take my chances with Depakote than to trust fate.
If your doctor has prescribed an anti-depressant for you, i would not take it under ANY conditions. There is nothing worse (in my experiences) than taking an anti-depressant if you have been diagnosed with any type of bi-polar disorder UNLESS you are on a mood stabilizer first and are equalized.
Also, there is no way I would trust a General Practitioner with my psychiatric problems. If you have not seen a psychiatrist, you need to for a proper diagnosis. I wish you the best of luck !
