Not true -- the reason this myth got propagated is because a dog's mouth is full of bacteria that are normally found in dogs but not in humans, so (generally) they don't do so well in the human body and you have less likelihood of a wound becoming infected if a dog licks it than if a human were to lick it. However, as you've noted, dogs eat their own poo, too, so it's not like they're particularly sanitary. Say no to bow-wow, say yes to Bactine.

I don't think a dogs mouth is incredibly sterile, so i would never allow my dog to lick an open wound if i had one.

idk, but i DO know that dogs mouths are one of the most CLEANEST things on earth...even if they lick there selves and other gross things does not mean there mouths are disgusting...i mean sure..u would think that but theres something that makes there mouths clean after eating and licking all that disgusting crap. u could look up on google to get in more detail but I'm just saying that dogs mouths are VERY clean so it could be possible for somthing in there mouth that helps clean wounds and sores etc.

No. If that were the case, dog bites would never get infected. In reality, they almost always do get infected, indicating the presence of bacteria that is harmful to both humans and other dogs.

Maybe... Its not the toungue that helps the wound heal faster it is the saliva! Its been said that saliva helps wound heal faster. It doesnt matter if its a dog's saliva or human.
