my new dentist recommended soft but my former dentist siad that hard toothbrushes are better for the gums

The "gold standard" is a brush with a 0.007" bristle diameter. This is because this is the diameter that will fit under a HEALTHY gum without doing damage. It should also be "end polished and rounded." Pretty much all brand name, soft bristle brushes meet these criteria, but it doesn't hurt to read the box to be sure that this is specified.
Medium and hard brushes obtain their degree of stiffness by using larger diameter bristles, so you should avoid them.

Not too many recommend hard tooth brushes anymore - which is why when shopping you will find less of those out on the shelves. HOWEVER...I went from a hard toothbrush to a soft one (as per my dentist's advice as well)...and both my teeth and my gums suffered for it - moved (myself) up to a medium brush...and you guessed it...back to a hard brush and teeth and gums doing better now. I floss daily - use a hard brush...and I'm sticking with it.

You need to be using soft, you should never be using anything else as they will damage your gums. I would not be going back to the dentist who suggested a hard toothbrush.

You should only be using a soft or even an extra soft toothbrush. Most people tend to brush their teeth to hard causing recession.

I prefer soft myself but have used mediums and they were fine. My dentist says to use soft.

I prefer soft bristles. The hard bristles can cause bleeding of the gums and wear away at the enamel. Medium bristles are ok.

soft is best so that you can brush hard and massage your gums, if you use a hard one you would not tend to brush as long nor hard enough because it would hurt and probably make your gums bleed and not do any good

I prefer hard toothbrushes . It feels like they clean better to me .

soft and compact for me. hard brushes destroy gums especially if you are in a hurry or don't pay attention.
