are ypu talking a deployment, or a PCS afloat? Subs have 2 crews, so while one is underway on the boat, the other one is home doing other stuff.

Underway periods can be as little as 24 hours long to as long as 6-9 months in length.

PCS orders can be anywhere from 3-6 years at a time.

It depends on what you mean. If you mean a "cruise" they are usually about 8-9mos long. But since we're under wartime conditions it may be longer.
If you mean a tour of duty, the average short contract is a minimum of 6 yrs.

when I was in the Navy, it was 3 on....3 off.....and if the sub was over seas, the replacement crew would fly to where it was......I do not know if it is the same today....but seeing how there are two crews for each sub...I suspect it si the same today
