Overnights work best for this problem. Saves everyone the embarrassment of this, even your nephew. If he's too big, try the depends or the ones for bladder control. If he's doing this during the day, again I would advise some type of depends. Autism is an amazing disease. You can be brilliant in some aspects of life, yet, completely incapable of caring for yourself. Wish you all the best.

There is a LOT of information available on a special diet for children and adults with Autism and Asperger's syndrome. The diet calls for eliminating all gluten and casein. It seems that most who have tried the diet are better able to function and interact in all areas of their life. Casein is found in milk and other dairy products. Dairy products (because of the casein or other factors, I am not sure) can also cause incontinence because they irritate the bladder. One doctor described it as "causing the bladder to sneeze" - not literally, but in effect. I hope some of this helps. Do a google on "autism gluten"

Positive reinforcement is the way to go. It works with my students. Find out what your nephew likes. Whether it be Power Rangers, computer time, manipulatives, anything except food will do.

Reward him every time he successfully urinates in the toilet by giving him 5 minutes with his favorite activity. Make sure he understands that he has to "do that, to get this" It's so hard to explain in writing, I like to take a more active role in situations like this.

I know this process is very stressful and hard on a parent and there will be times your sibling will want to quit, but you have to keep them going. Even though your nephew has autism he's still a part of the future of this world and we can't let him down. You can click on my little face and contact me if you have anymore questions. I'd love to help.

If your nephew has autism, a specialist (perhaps teacher or nurse) has been assign to his parents for education and therapy. This question should be asked to the therapist. Perhaps you should ask your sister if she and her husband have attended any sessions on behaviour management for your nephew.
Your nephew does not process thought like others (as you already know), but he can learn how to be integrated into normal social structure, and that does not include peeing anywhere you like ...... My daughter-in-law teaches the autistic children at her school. They are treasures ! Good Luck !
