The failure of the French at Dien Bien Phue had little to do with the American involvement in Vietnam!
The U.S were scared of communist dominoe effect, including the Australians, my brother fought there in the OZ army.
Trying not to sound too anti U.S! I fear that they were worried about a possible take over of the region by the communists.
A disastrous mistake. 55,000 dead U.S soldiers! For what?
When will we ever learn?
I'm a Brit, but what the U.S administration did was terrible. Not only for the Vietnamese but for those fallen soldiers!

Vietnam is one of those countries that other countries kept trying to rule (China, France, Japan) then when they got their independence they couldn't agree what to do so they were fighting and it got divided in to North with Russia, China and such backing them and the South with the US, Australia, and such backing them up. So really then it came down to Allies not wanting russia or china to have a say. So we fought a war against them on Vietnam soil.

We fought with flawed procedures and couldn't beat the Viet Cong Propaganda gadget. Had we fought a warfare the way we fought in international warfare 2 the South could nonetheless be round yet this turned right into a Police action no longer incredibly a warfare. to comprehend better go for your community Library and search for a video sequence talked about as Vietnam: A television heritage. this can inform you the way and why the warfare all started and the way it ended. also this teach is photo and in no way a movie yet actual existence television and documentary images.

To stem the tide of communism, the theory was that if we didn't stop communism in Korea and Vietnam, pretty soon Communist revolutions would be happening in Mexico and Canada.

We had an obligation to South Vietnam which we created in order to fight Communism. We wanted bases there, we got them, and so we were obligated to protect them.

because the us government were anti-communism at that time (and still are to a lesser degree) the next largest power to them at that time was the ussr and after that china , both of which were communist states so when pol pot took over vietnam aided by china in a military junta the americans moved in to eradicate the communist uprising (sound familiar)you have to remember that the 'cold war' was at its height then and the west was terrified of the 'atomic bomb'

To prevent the communists from committing genocide. Unfortunately, traitors among our own people were successful in getting us to leave for political reasons even though we were crushing them militarily.
That genocide did happen BTW. Millions of innocent people were killed for no real reason whatsoevre beyond using terror to foster obedience. It's instructive how all the people who were involved in the peace movement, worked very hard to make sure the US didn't intervene as it was happening. And guess who was the number one player in that bit of heinous evil? Why none other than John Kerry.
Liberals are about genocide....and alway have been.

After WWII, Vietnam declared it's independence. France would not have it, so they invaded Vietnam to take them over. We felt obligated to help France with money and weapons. When they got their *** kicked, we were already involved so we tried to take over for France. If France would have just let them be, I seriously doubt we would have ever been there. Give France a big F YOU! I hope we never ever bail their *** out again.

Same reason we fought in Korea...The Domino Effect. We thought that if one country fell to communism all those around it would as well.
Vietnam was French Indo-China at the beginning of the conflict. We stepped in to stop Communism and help France.
