safety but since this is in the jokes/riddles sectin im gonna guess cuz they cant walk in schools (saw it on a tv show)

Protection. A large school of fish looks more imposing than fishes on their own (ie, it looks like a large animal as opposed to lots of smaller ones).

If you weren't talking about the joke, then they do it for protection. Safety in numbers. Sometimes it confuses their enemies into thinking it is a big fish!! =)

well its due to the survival instinct you see if a whale came and ate a mouthful most would survive individually they would be picked off smaller predators would not attack a large school of fish

they are not clever enough to be individuals.. and hav e u seen them scatter...... imagine tif they didnt swim in schools...crash bang...fish curry!!
