Imagine this. You’ve just bought a new home which you furnish with all sorts of nice fittings and fixtures, then prepare the grounds and garden. You plant a wide range of trees, shrubs, flowers, plants and vegetables. You clip and prune as time goes on, spray the weeds, and generally keep your property in good shape.
Many years pass and your gardens are flourishing, not a weed to be seen anywhere. You head off on holiday, a weed pops up and bugs start to crawl all over it. Not to worry, when you return home you spray the gardens, killing all the bugs and weeds. Everything is back to normal.
Now consider the universe. After billions of years a little planet (weed) called Earth pops up and it’s crawling with bugs called humans. Do you really think the gardener (or creator) really cares about the bugs and weeds? Do you think the gardener will destroy you? Do you think that the bugs (humans) on the weed (Earth) have any idea what’s going on in the rest of universe?

I love your analogy. The US Skeptic Mag, latest issue, has some great articles you'd enjoy. Does prayer really work - crunching the numbers proves not (big surprise there). Are christians more moral or happy than the rest - nope. Etc etc
Best wishes from a fellow athiest. We're on the same page!

In the bible the relation between God and mankind is often compared as the relation between a father and his children. Even if one of his children would be led astray, if the child would deny that he's a child of the father, even if the child didn't want to have contct with the fater - would a real father still not love him? Would a real father not mourn about the loss of the son? The same is in the parable (is that English?) of the lost son. When the son came back, saying father, I've done wrong. The father was overjoyed. Not because the father was right (I told you so!), but because his son was back.
To get back to your question: I think God really cares about mankind. We humans haven't got the faintest clue what's going on in the "rest of the universe". And I'm glad I don't have to know, to love the Father.

First this is lifetime of the Universe.

Currently Kali yuga is going on ...
Avarice and wrath is common, men will openly display animosities towards one another. Ignorance of Dharma will occur. Lust will be viewed as being socially acceptable. People will have thoughts of murder for no justification, and they will see nothing wrong with their mind-set.
People will no longer follow the science of reason and instead be led by their emotions instead of their minds. Family murders will also occur. People will see those who are helpless as easy targets and remove everything from them.
Many other unwanted changes will occur. The right hand will deceive the left and the left the right. Men with false reputation of learning will teach the Truth and the old will betray the senselessness of the young, and the young will betray the dotage of the old. Cowards will have the reputation of bravery and the brave will be cheerless like cowards. People will not trust a single person in the world, not even their immediate family. Even husband and wife will find contempt in each other.
In the Kali yuga there will be teenage pregnancies. The primary cause will be the social acceptance of intercourse as being the central requirement of life.
It is believed that sin will increase exponentially, whilst virtue will fade and cease to flourish. People will take vows only to break them soon.
Alongside death and famine being everywhere, men will have lustful thoughts and so will women. People will, without reason destroy trees and gardens. As previously mentioned, men will murder. There will be no respect for animals, and also meat eating will start.
People will become addicted to intoxicating drinks. Men will find their jobs stressful and will go to retreats to escape their work.
Gurus will no longer be respected and their students will attempt to injure them. Their teachings will be insulted and followers of Kama will wrest control of the mind from all humans.
Throughout the age, humans become shorter in height and weaker physically as well as mentally and spiritually.
As the sin increases exponentially, so will the incidence of divine justice and wrath. Sinners will be punished sooner by apparent freak means. However witnesses to these acts of justice will have a choice to recognize the power of God and submit to Him or disregard it as a freak incident and continue on the path of Sin and eventually be destroyed in the most gruesome incidents.

While there is beauty in nature, it comes short in communicating the big picture. That's why we have special revelation through a Book. Why a book? Why not? His Book of books, the Bible tells us how creation took place, the entrance and effects of sin, and the promised Redeemer. His love for man is best and most fully realized through what happened on the cross. "For God demonstrated His love, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for (as a substitute) for us." (Romans 5:8)

lol! God created the earth, it was not a "weed" that popped up. W are one of those trees, shrubs, or fixtures. How could you acknowlege the existence of a God, but not the fact that he created the earth?

Thats a good idea of what our world could be like in the big picture. However, most who believe in God believe that he made man specially in his image. Most believe that we are special to him and are gifted with many freedoms from him.
Your idea focuses more on "a God" rather than bible God. To answer your question more simply though: We don't know he cares and we could all be destroyed at any moment.
yay! =P

FIRSTLY WE ARE MADE IN HIS IMAGE AND HIS LIKENESS SO THERE IS SOME DOUBT THAT HE WOULD CONSIDER US AS MERE BUGS. SECONDLY WOULD YOU SACRIFICE YOUR SON FOR A BUNCH OF BUGS? I THINK NOT. IF YOU REALLY WANT THE ANSWER ALL YOU NEED DO IS PICK UP A BIBLE AND BEGIN READING IT IN THE NEW TESTEMENT BOOK OF JOHN. IT IS WHAT I LIKE TO CALL IT THE BIBLE WITHIN THE BIBLE. JOHN 3;16 sums it up.
